BRIXMIS
After the business of the AGM, Ted Scott, one of our members, and a past member of
Brixmis gave an interesting talk on Brixmis; the British Commanders in Chief Mission to
the Soviet Forces in Germany – which was so secret that nobody knew they existed or
was allowed to talk about them until after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Their overt
objective was to liaise with the Russians in the overseeing of divided Germany, but their
covert objective was …...secret.
He explained how it was formed after WWII as a peace mission to liaise with the Russians
when Germany was divided and after the Russian and British generals had arranged to
have a presence in each other's territory. Their only public presence - and even then it
was incognito – was the exchange of prisoners during the cold war. Their covert objective
was gathering information on the strength and type of Russian equipment, tanks and
planes within the occupied territory.
Ted is now involved with the Brixmis association to ensure that the history of these brave
men is not lost to future generations.
