The Quest to Discover HMS Wager
HMS Wager was a square rigged Royal Navy ship that was wrecked off the Chilean shore in 1741 in what is now known as Wager Island. The wreck of the Wager became famous for the subsequent adventures of the survivors who found themselves marooned on a desolate island in the middle of a Patagonian winter, and in particular because of the Wager mutiny which followed. This was the basis of an interesting talk given by Sheila Critchley to the members of Barton on Sea Probus Club, and their wives at their May Dinner.
Sheila then went on to explain how some of the crew managed to survive, the trials and tribulations that followed and how, amongst the crew, there was one John Byron, grandfather of the poet.
However, what made this talk unique, was the insight that Sheila was able to bring to the quest to discover the wreckage and the bleakness of the area, with her stories as a member of Blashford Snell's expedition to find the wreck in recent years.
At our July meeting on 28th July, John Lesley will be telling us all about The New Forest Airfields
